How to Wash your Human Hair Wig or Topper

You've made a substantial investment in your human hair wig or topper, and your goal is to extend its lifespan and maintain its stunning appearance. When it comes to maintaining your alternate hair, there are a few rules to follow.  Start by choosing salon-grade products that are bursting with goodness and completely free from parabens and sulfates. These products are formulated with the highest quality ingredients to ensure that your human hair wig or topper receives the proper care and attention it deserves - it's like giving your hair a VIP treatment! While it might seem a tad pricier, think of it as a smart investment. Choosing professional salon products not only pampers your luscious best friend but also proves its worth in the long run, leaving you with fabulous, long-lasting and hydrated locks!

Say Goodbye to Parabens and Sulphates: Extend the Life of Your Human Hair Piece by Preventing Damage and Maintaining Softness

You're probably wondering why we should avoid parabens and sulphates? In short, these products strip oil and moisture from alternate hair and, as they don't have the ability to reproduce this lost moisture, your hair system will be left dry, brittle and will need far earlier replacement. One example of what sulphates achieve is that "clean and squeaky" feeling we all love after shampooing.

If you own a medical wig, a good tip for in-between washes is to use a baby wipe to remove any oil that has built up on the silicone.

Here at Frankie, we only use Pure Hair Care.  This beautiful range of products are 100% Australian made, organically certified and follow sustainable business practices.  More importantly, they do not test on animals and remain sulphate and paraben free.

Step-by-Step Guide to Washing your Wig or Topper

Now that you're in the know, let's get into the steps of giving it the royal treatment it deserves!

Ensure that all the clips are closed, and start by brushing out any knots or tangles starting from the bottom upwards.

Fill your sink with tepid water, and create a lather using your chosen shampoo. Grasping the silk top to minimise any tangling, and keeping the natural looking part in place, dip your piece in and out of the water and give it an occasional swirl. Rinse thoroughly, then apply your chosen conditioner directly onto your hands and distribute through the mid-lengths. Take care to avoid the silk top as it can cause the hand-tied knots to dislodge. Rinse thoroughly after a few minutes.

Blonde pieces need extra care. We recommend leaving the conditioner on for a longer period and ensure you use a monthly hair treatment mask.  Our favourite is this.

To dry, remove excess water by gently blotting with a towel. Place on a towel with the cap facing upwards till almost dry, and then you can style.  If you are going to use heat tools, read some tips in our FAQ's here.

Please note that over-washing can cause oxidisation sooner and will reduce its overall longevity. Do not wash more than once per month. It's also important to keep your own hair clean, as there will be less chance that your own natural oils will transfer across - therefore making washing more frequent.

If you have purchased a lace front piece, ensure you are extra careful to not cause any rips or tears during the shampooing and conditioning process.

Happy shampooing and conditioning!
